Gender issues are ultimately human issues--which we can't discount without diminishing people in general.

If we want better relations between the sexes, we need to stop fighting our gender differences, and try to better understand and live with them.

This doesn’t mean that anybody should be held back, degraded, or forced into roles that don’t feel comfortable or natural.  It just means accepting and celebrating our differences.

The notion that our gender differences are merely a product of environment is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain, anyway.  Perhaps the greatest evidence to the contrary is what we have found with our children.  Mothers with strong backgrounds in NOW and women’s rights who have raised their children in the most conscientiously gender-neutral ways are still finding that their daughters like to play with girls' toys, and their sons like to play with boys' toys.

Should we really be all that surprised to learn that certain differences are innate?

And perhaps more to the point, can we realistically claim to honor a general principle of "diversity," if we fail to recognize or honor a difference among people that exists literally at the cellular level?

As for concerns that this might somehow represent a step backward, it should be pointed out that intelligently recognizing gender diversity can actually enhance our freedom.
