To cap it off, I’m more than a little offended by the lack of regard many of today’s immigrants have for America and its culture, its aspirations and its values. 

Far too few seem to be interested in actually becoming Americans.  Many don’t even bother to learn the language.

I don’t want my country overrun by people who have no more regard for it than they would for a bus depot or a movie line—who treat it simply as a place to be to get something—i.e., a job.

This is especially the case when it’s my job they want.

In fact, to welcome people into America under such circumstances seems to me equivalent to inviting a stranger into my house because he’s attracted to my wife.

Yes, I may have once historically been in a similar position of wanting her and not having her.  And perhaps I’m being less than fully open-minded and charitable for wanting to keep her for myself now that I’ve got her.

But all things considered, is my reaction really all that unnatural or unreasonable?
